Men's Golf Rallies at Pine Dunes Invitational

Men's Golf Rallies at Pine Dunes Invitational

The first competition is in the books for the Providence men's golf program. The Sea Beggars competed in the Pine Dunes Invitational, hosted by LeTourneau University in Frankston, TX. on September 6th and 7th. Youth, rust, and first match jitters led to a slower than anticipated start for the Sea Beggars, but the men's rallied response was impressive. The orange and blue were able to drop 20 strokes off their first round 327 for a 2nd round 307. In the final round of competition, the Sea Beggars dropped another seven strokes to post a final round team score of 300, which was just two strokes off the day's best round.

Nick Chavez led the Sea Beggars in scoring with a 226, taking it under par for his final round of 70. Not far behind were Marc Lengtat (SR/Corning, CA) with 230 and Trey Kirschner (FR) with 232. Hayden Hughes (SO/Bakersfield, CA) contributed two counting scores for the event and one for Tyler Stauffer (SO/Flowery Branch, GA). Chavez's 226 was good for a 5th place individual finish. Coach Bowers said, "All in all, it was a great trip to start the season. The guys got to play four rounds at the best public golf course in Texas and find out where their games are. I think it's going to take us a while to get near our potential as we are still learning about our tendencies, strengths, and weaknesses. With a good fall season and plan for the offseason, I think this is a team that could post team scores in the 280's and 90's in the spring. We have a pretty good team culture established."

Even with the slow start, it was a great trip for the Sea Beggars and there is great optimism for how the season will progress. The men are back in action at William Jessup's October 19th/20th event hosted at Whitney Oaks Golf Course.
