Hat-Trick Tandem
In a match between the Cal Maritime Keelhaulers and the Providence Christian Sea Beggars on October 10th, the Lady Sea Beggars womens' soccer team sought to get their first conference win of the season. Providence came out firing on all cylinders and were successful securing the win by a score of 7-2.
The Sea Beggars started the game strong and took an early lead in the first half. Sutton Denny scored a goal off of a corner kick from Isabella Pecunes and assisted by Janelle Lopez at the 4:30 mark. Providence organized well out of the back, efficiently possessed the ball, and built momentum for the rest of the game. Alyssa Acuna and Paula Gallardo Villanueva attacked the Keelhauler back line early and often, with Acuna assisting Alexandra Meza scoring a goal at the 6:34 mark. The defensive line for the Lady Sea Beggars, consisting of Janelle Lopez, Isabella Pecunes, Montserrath Salazar, and Isabella Henao, limited the Keelhaulers offense, and only allowed goals off set pieces. Denny continued her scoring streak late in the first half, where she scored two more goals, one assisted by Jade Tanguy and another unassisted, which completed a hat-trick. The Lady Sea Beggars finished the first half leading 4-0.
In the second half, Pecunes moved from center back to a midfield position, getting her more involved on the offensive side of the ball. Pecunes' offensive attacks were deliberate and efficient, scoring goals on each of her three shots. With the assist from Heidi Vander Meulen, Pecunes was able to score her first goal of the game at the 50:39 mark. Pecunes dominated on the field and managed to score two more goals later in the half, matching Denny as both completed hat-tricks on the day. Pecunes' on field performance drew conference recognition as she was awarded Cal Pac Offensive Player of the Week. Despite the two goals by the Keelhaulers, goalkeeper Georgia Hoogstra made five crucial saves, helping the Lady Sea Beggars secure their first Cal Pac Conference win of the season with a score of 7-2.
Denny continued to be an offensive force on the field as she accumulated her seventh goal of the season. Pecunes demonstrated her versatility, showcasing her dominant skills at both ends of the field. The seven goal outing was a team win with crucial involvement from every player on the Lady Sea Beggar roster. Providence's teamwork and efficient finishing proved to be imperative in finding on field success.
The Lady Sea Beggars look to continue their team first approach and cohesive play as they finish the season strong in the following weeks. The Beggars are back on the road against La Sierra University on Thursday, October 24th, at 5 p.m., and then back at home for Senior Day against Soka University at Kare Youth Field Irwindale on Saturday, October 26th, at 2:30 p.m. to finish the season.
