Resilient Team Wins

The Providence Christian baseball team had a thrilling week of games, emerging victorious over University of Redlands Bulldogs and sweeping Nelson University (AZ) Warriors in a four game series. All of the games were a rollercoaster of emotions, featuring multiple lead changes, drastic comebacks, and a late-game offensive surge, but the Sea Beggars continuously found a way to seal their win.

On Tuesday, February 18th, 2025, the Sea Beggars kicked off their week against the Redlands Bulldogs. Redlands took an early lead in the game and was up 5-1 in the third inning. The Beggars began to chip away at the deficit with Tucker Panarisi and Victor Vega each contributing RBI singles. In the sixth inning, the Sea Beggars exploded for seven runs. Kyle Fuller ignited the rally with a three-RBI double, followed by crucial RBIs from Reese Shioji, Nathan Oliveira, and Isaiah Ayala. This offensive outburst flipped the game giving the Beggars a 10-6 lead. The Bulldogs did not back down and fought back every inning, narrowing the gap to 10-9. The Beggars added insurance runs to extend their lead to an eventual 13-10 victory. Despite Redlands' effort to close the gap, Brendon Demuth secured the win with a scoreless ninth inning, earning a save.

From Friday, February 21st to Saturday, February 22nd, the Sea Beggars began a four game series against Nelson (AZ) and won each game in a different way, keeping fans on the edge of their seats every outing. In the first game, Providence Christian showcard the offensive prowess early in the game, giving the Beggars a commanding lead. Landon Raskin and Elijah De Guzman were standout performers, with Raskin hitting a home run and Guzman also hitting a home run and contributing four RBIs to the team's tally. The Sea Beggars' ability to capitalize on Nelson's mistakes, coupled with their offensive firepower, ultimately secured the 16-11 victory.

In the second game, the Sea Beggars set the tone early in the first inning. Fuller and Guzman scored, giving the Beggars a quick 2-0 lead. After both teams remained scoreless in four innings, the Sea Beggars extended their lead with Ayala delivering a crucial double to center field and bringing in three runs as Ronnel Castro, Victor Vega, and Jordan Aguallo crossed home plate. The combined efforts on the mound with Reese Shioji and Luke Silvestro was instrumental in allowing only three hits and one unearned run in seven innings. The Beggars displayed great team effort and managed to get a 5-1 win over Nelson (AZ).

In the third game, the Sea Beggars won a closely contested game. The game remained scoreless through the first four innings, but Nelson was first to break the deadlock in the fifth inning, putting the Warriors ahead 2-0. However, the Sea Beggars responded decisively in the sixth inning. Fuller started the comeback with an RBI double to score Raskin. Vega's RBI single, coupled with a fielding error, allowed Aguallo and Luke Skinner to cross the plate and gave Providence a 3-2 lead. Oliveira further extended the lead to 4-2 with a groundout RBI, scoring Brandon McCray. Despite Nelson's effort to add more runs, Chris Gonzalez, who pitched 7.2 innings, did not allow them to take back the lead, and Anthony Alexander held firm and secured the save. The Sea Beggars eventually won the game 4-3 and extended their winning streak.

In the final game of the series, the Sea Beggars overcame a large Nelson lead, showcasing a dramatic comeback. The Warriors started strong and scored three runs in the first inning. Providence chipped away but was still down 6-2 in the middle of the fourth inning. Despite Nelson's early lead, they struggled to maintain momentum and Providence's offense gained traction. In the fourth inning, Guzman delivered a powerful three-run homer, narrowing the deficit to 6-5. In the fifth inning, the Sea Beggars unleashed an offensive storm, scoring six runs. Aguallo's grand slam was the highlight, bringing in four runs and cemented their lead with a final score of 11-6. Nolan Troxel and Nicolas Johnson managed to contain Nelson's hitters and allowed only one run in the final five innings. The Sea Beggars stayed resilient and showcased their potential for the remainder of the season.

When asked to sum up this past week on how the team performed, Coach Eric Fuller replied, "There honestly isn't just one play or one guy that stands out this past week. Is it Aguallo's grand slam or De Guzman's clutch tanks? Is it Ayala's go-ahead game-winning gapper on Friday or Fuller's 3-run game-tying momentum-shifting double on Tuesday? Is it Raskin getting on base or Vega driving him in? Is it Gonzalez's steadiness of 7 2/3 or Demuth's fiery competitiveness that closes out the ball game? That is all of it. It is all of us. It's cliche, but this is a team. A team that trusts one another to get the job done. A team that just finds a way with gritty resilience." Coach Fuller hopes that this team continues to compete and play hard every day.
