Hard Work Displayed
The Providence Christian volleyball team traveled crosstown to NCAA DIII opponent, Occidental College, and emerged victorious in an exciting 3-1 match. The Lady Sea Beggars rallied from a one game deficit to come away with the victory and a 4-5 overall record.
The Beggars surrendered an 8-point lead in the opening game, eventually leading to Occidental's 25-20 game one win. However, the Beggars quickly turned the tide and dominated the next three sets, winning with scores of 25-18, 25-12, and 25-14. Providence's performance was marked by consistent attacking and serving. Tiari Ho'okano was a standout player, contributing 13 kills and Jacey Loewen also made a significant impact, recording 9 kills. Isabella Taue'etia played a crucial role as the team's setter, tallying 33 assists and 2 aces.
Defensively, The Lady Sea Beggars showcased their skills with a total of 54 digs. Chenelle Jones led the team with 12 digs, while Valeria Garcia and Tehani Ho'okano contributed 8 and 7 digs, respectively. The team also had 8 blocks, with Jennifer Martinez and Jacey Loewen each recording 2 blocks. Both teams displayed their skills and determination throughout the match. Providence Christian's strong attacking and solid defense proved to be the difference-maker.
Junior transfer Iris del Valley said, "Tonight's game against Occidental was a great display of everything we have been working on in practice! It was nice to see all the hard work pay off in game play and for us to be in control of the match!" Junior transfer Tehani Ho'okano added, "Tonight's game started off slow, but we pulled through in the end. It was a good game and we learned so much from it. We still have much work to do, but I am so proud of us! #SkoBeggs!"
Overall, the match between Providence and Occidental was another opportunity to grow, showcasing the talent and competitiveness of both programs. The Lady Sea Beggar's will look to build on this win in their return to the Witherspoon Cove and Clement Court. The Beggars host California Pacific Conference opponent Simpson tonight at 7pm, followed by UC Merced on Friday at 7pm and Pacific Union on Saturday at 8:30pm.
