Together And United
The Providence Christian College women's volleyball team had a big week as they took to the road and picked up two wins against familiar California Pacific Conference opponents. The Lady Sea Beggars encountered some obstacles along the way but persevered in the face of the challenges on and off the court.
Providence opened the road series traveling east to Riverside where they took on La Sierra and emerged with a 3-0 win. Senior Tiari Ho'okano had a standout performance with 17 kills along with sophomore sisters Jacey Loewen and Jenelle Loewen, contributing to the team's success with 9 and 5.5 points respectively. Freshman Isabella Taue'etia played a crucial role as the setter, recording 29 assists and 2 service aces. The Lady Sea Beggars strong offensive performance and effective teamwork led to a convincing victory over the Golden Eagles. The team's ability to adjust and maintain a high attack percentage throughout the match played a crucial role in the success.
When asked about the match, sophomore Janelle Loewen said," I am really proud of our effort and grit. We never gave up, even when La Sierra had two set points against. I loved how we continued to keep playing our game no matter the cost. La Sierra did run a different defense than we normally play against, and I think we did a great job adjusting to where to put the ball down."
On Saturday, the Lady Sea Beggars traveled north to Lancaster where they took on the University of Antelope Valley, knocking off the Pioneers in four games. The first set saw UAV take an early lead, winning with a score of 25-23. However, Providence quickly bounced back in the second set, winning 25-20, followed by 25-17 and a tightly contested 29-27 game four win, clinching the match. Tiari Ho'okano again rose to the occasion for the Beggars, contributing 17 kills and accumulating 18 points. Sanaii Cooper also played a crucial role, recording 15 kills. The Lady Sea Beggars displayed strong serving, recording 14 service aces, with Chenelle Jones earning 6 of them. Defensively, Providence showcased exceptional defensive skills, recording 113 digs, 17 of which came from Tehani Ho'okano.
A car accident and injuries forced the Beggars to face UAV with several players unavailable. There was a next up mentality as everyone had to step up and fill roles they might not normally play. Junior transfer, Tehani Ho'okano explained, "Tonight's match was full of several emotions, it was an emotional rollercoaster. It was a tough game not only because this is the school I previously came from and all my girls are still on the team, but we also came into the match without our usual lineup. However, the girls who did play really stepped up and continued to have each other's backs on the court. We continued to push through and were able to come out with a win with what we had. My Lady Sea Beggars always make playing this game a whole lot better and fun. The energy, the trust, and the communication on the court can always be counted on from the girls! No matter what though, we can always find ways to improve and get better!!" Sophomore Rachel Jensen added, "It was an emotionally charged match, and we were eager to take the dub. With so many key players being on the bench, it was more so a test of discipline and resilience for those on the court. It is truly a testament to this team and the work we have put in that we came out victorious, despite all the challenges thrown our way."
Overall, the Beggars' strong attacking performance, combined with solid serving and exceptional defense, played a crucial role in the victory. The match showcased the skill and determination of both teams, providing an entertaining night for those watching.
The Lady Sea Beggars now have their bye week to regroup, heal, and focus on the second half of Cal Pac play. With anything, reflection can be a powerful tool to evaluate the current course while planning for the future, and celebrating the accomplishments to date. The 2023 team has roared out to a record start, boasting an overall record of 9-8 and 5-5 in conference. This is the best start to October in school history, and the Lady Sea Beggars don't want to stop here. The team has played with confidence and determination and has showcased a united front, with everyone willing to dig deep and play for one another. Two of our Lady Sea Beggars have earned Cal Pac Players of the Week, with Isabella Taue'etia receiving Setter of the Week and Chenelle Jones Defender of the Week. There is much to be proud of, but we know the team isn't satisfied and will continue to compete in every match.
Providence next takes the court when they head north to play UC Merced on October 12th, Pacific Union on October 13th, and Simpson on October 14th. In the first round of Cal Pac play the Lady Sea Beggars defeated Simpson 3-1, Pacific Union 3-0, and lost to UC Merced 3-1. Six conference members will earn their way to the Cal Pac Championships in November and Providence is currently in a three-way tie for 5th place with Simpson and Park Gilbert at 5-5 in conference play. The Beggars are in a strong position to make a solid push for the playoffs, and we look forward to an exciting second round of conference play. #SKOBEGGS
