Emerging Victorious
The California Pacific Conference (Cal Pac) conducted the North vs. South Jamboree for women's volleyball at Simpson University's James M. Grant Center Gym. The Providence Christian Sea Beggars completed day one with a 3-0 win against Pacific Union and a tough 3-0 loss against UC Merced. In the final game of the jamboree on Friday, October 4th, the Sea Beggars were determined to work together and emerge victorious against the Simpson Red Hawks, who were coming off two wins on day one.
The Lady Beggars started strong, holding the lead for much of the first set. The Red Hawks took advantage of some errors and tied the score at 21. The Beggars then focused and won the set 25-22 with the help of timely kills by Jenelle Loewen and terrific serves by Iris del Valle. Although set two was close and tied at 11, Simpson continually found ways to score, kept the lead throughout the set, and won 25-20.
In set three, the Red Hawks continued their momentum and kept the lead at 19-13. After taking a timeout, Coach Jose Gonzalez regrouped the Lady Sea Beggars, reenergizing them and instilling confidence to win the set. The ladies proceeded to go on a 12-3 run to close out the set and complete a 25-22 comeback win with the help of multiple kills by Jacey Loewen and Sanaii Cooper, and service aces from del Valle and Jenelle Loewen. As the ladies demonstrated resilience and tenacity, they sought to finish the game in the next set. In an intense set four, both teams exchanged rallies back and forth, with Providence Christian taking a solid 22-15 lead. After a timely Simpson timeout though, the Red Hawks were able to adjust and make a run, tying the game at 24. With encouragement from coach Gonzalez, the calming presence of volunteer assistant coach Valeria Garcia and inspiration from the bench, the Sea Beggars got two crucial kills from Jacey and Jenelle Loewen and won the set 26-24. The ladies won the match 3-1, and the Sea Beggars finished the jamboree 2-1 and currently sit tied for second place with Simpson in the Cal Pac standings.
Jacey Loewen was a standout player for the Lady Sea Beggars, recording an impressive 22 kills with a hitting percentage of .439 and 24.5 points to lead her team to victory. Jenelle Loewen and Elaine Turituri also made significant contributions to the team's success with 18 kills, 5 blocks, and 5 kills, 9 points, respectively. Tehani Ho'okano made a huge contribution with 47 set assists, and Chenelle Jones and del Valle each had three service aces as well.
Overall, it was a closely contested match, with both teams showcasing their talents and perseverance on the court. Providence's strong performance ultimately led them to victory and established great momentum for conference games to come. .
